Former Chelsea player Asmir Begovic has criticized Chelsea’s transfer activity.
Under Todd Boeli, Chelsea have been spending big every transfer window. Last season, they spent more than $800 million in two transfers and added the likes of Raheem Sterling, Mark Cucurella, Enzo Fernandez, and Mikhail Mourinho.
This season has been no different. After selling the likes of Kai Havertz, Mason Mount, and Mateo Kovacic to the tune of around $400 million, Chelsea have since focused on signings and spent over $600 million. They spent €116 million (KRW 164.1 billion) to acquire Caicedo alone, and also spent significant sums on the likes of Romeo Rabia, Christopher Nkunku, Axel Dissah, and Nicola Jackson. You can’t criticize the signings per se. As long as the results follow, everything is ‘OK’. However, Chelsea is currently in a serious slump. With one win, one draw, and two losses (four points) in four league games, they’re in 12th place, the same position they were in the previous season. The gap between them and “first place” Manchester City is already eight points. Last season’s biggest problem, an anemic offense, remained the same.
It’s frustrating to see so much investment without results. Begovic, a former Chelsea player, also criticized the club’s transfer market behavior.
According to the British outlet Metro, he said, “I watch soccer like a madman. But I don’t recognize half of the Chelsea squad. For me, this is really strange. I don’t know what the base of the club is. Saying it’s part of a rebuild is just an excuse.” 스포츠토토
